Description
Leonard Bernstein's operetta Candide is not a moralizing treatise, but an ironic and funny story appealing to everyone. Bernstein's work, inspired by Voltaire's philosophical tale, underwent numerous modifications to appear in the minds of the recipients. Different versions of the libretto and changes in the score meant that several varieties of the work wandered from the United States to Europe.
This allegorical tale of a journey in search of the “best of the worlds” and an attempt to understand it poses difficult but important questions for the reader and viewer. Leonard Bernstein, a composer of symphonic, chamber, ballet, film and musicals for Broadway, worked simultaneously on Candide and West Side Story, but this work based on the French original Voltaire soon premiered.
In the implementation of Anna Wieczur-Bluszcz (director) and Ewa Gdowiok (stage design and costumes) we will move to the classic world, full of old engravings and sea travels, but we will also focus on the universal issues of Candide – what is the meaning of our life, or more good in us or evil, what are our motivations? The musical director of the premiere is José Maria Florêncio. The spectacle uses photographs of objects from the collections of the National Museum in Gdańsk.
