Description
In the operetta The Polish Wedding (Polskie wesele), we meet Bolesław, a young insurgent in hiding in Austria. His longing for his beloved Jadzia forces him to return to his homeland illegally. At the least expected moment, he discovers that Jadzia is set to marry his uncle, Count Staszek Zagórski. Will the two lovers be able to change their fate?
The Polish Wedding by Józef Beer is a remarkable work that balances between opera, operetta, and musical theatre, and will receive its first-ever full stage production in Poland. Originally written in German, the piece remained absent from the Polish theatrical repertoire for decades; a few years ago, it was presented in concert form in Kraków.
Its seemingly light, melodramatic plot conceals a profound historical and political context. The action takes place during the period of the Russian Partition of Poland, and the private love story intertwines with questions of national identity, belonging, and collective memory.
“At first glance, it appears to be an operetta, but in fact it is a work ‘between genres’ and between worlds,” emphasizes Tomasz Konieczny. “The Polish Wedding speaks about community, about the rituals and symbols that constitute it, but also about the tensions arising from history and politics.”
