Kobborg as Coppélius
Léo Delibes’ ballet Coppélia returns to the Opera Bałtycka stage this coming weekend (October 2–4). The production, choreographed by Johan Kobborg, premiered in April 2024 and has since returned to the Gdańsk stage several times. This time, however, the performances will be truly special—the choreographer himself will star in the role of Coppélius!
Johan Kobborg is an outstanding Danish choreographer, director, and world-renowned dancer, as well as a former Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet in London and the Royal Danish Ballet. Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog and winner of prestigious awards (including a Laurence Olivier Award nomination), he is famous for his mastery in blending classical technique with modern expression. He has created spectacular productions staged at some of the world’s most iconic venues—from the Royal Albert Hall to Polish opera houses—and served as the choreographer for the film The White Crow, directed by Ralph Fiennes.
The performance is designed for audiences of all ages. For younger viewers, it will be a lighthearted, humorous story and a wonderful introduction to classical ballet, while older audience members are sure to discover something deeper within it.
“If we look at it as pure entertainment, Coppélia is an ideal, colorful, and funny ballet performance for young audiences,” said Johan Kobborg ahead of the premiere. “My goal, however, is to take this story to another emotional level, allowing us to show something more. For me, the key to interpreting the libretto became Doctor Coppélius—an adult man sitting at home creating dolls that he doesn’t sell, but keeps for himself. Reflecting on this character, I thought of someone who has lost something precious in life.”
