Description
The most famous Polish opera, or at least the most famous in the oeuvre of Stanisław Moniuszko. The author of the libretto is Jan Chęciński. It is divided into four acts. It took Moniuszko over 3 years to compose it (1861-1864).
In "The Haunted Manor", both romantic, patriotic and comedy threads are intertwined. The heroes of the opera are two brothers, Stefan and Zbigniew, returning from the war. They vow perpetual cavalry to be always ready to "donate blood for the fatherland". Aunt has different plans for them, as she has planned games for her nephews. A visit to the title estate of Sword-bearer, a friend of the brothers' father, however, turns the whole situation upside down.
There are many references to the Sarmatian tradition in the opera. Moniuszko incorporated old Polish rituals, costumes, songs and dances into the action, incl. fiery Masuria for the final.
