Project Butterfly

This is an international cooperation project aimed at increasing ecological awareness in the creation of opera and developing a new approach to sustainable development in opera theaters by identifying new environmentally friendly practices related to the production, stage presentation and promotion of opera.

The project  includes the full process of co-creation and co-production of a sustainable three-act opera - from its commissioning to audience presence and subsequent dissemination of proven sustainability practices, with particular emphasis on engaging young audiences in the entire process.

The 2023-2024 season is the first stage of activities:

- announcement of a competition for composers and selection of librettists for a new opera

- cooperation with local partners in Modena, Gdańsk and Helsinki, including workshops for high school students and developing their ideas for topics for a new opera around a selected element (Gdańsk-water, Modena-earth, Helsinki-air),

- reflection on ecological practices when creating (e.g. the concept of "Theatre green book", "green practices", new technologies in theater such as AR and VR) and reception of opera performances,

- artistic residence of composers and librettists of a new work in Gdańsk.
