Description
Coppélia was created in the 19th century and was very popular from the very beginning. The audience of that time appreciated not only the music and choreography, but also the libretto itself, based on the stories of E. T. A. Hoffmann. Following its literary prototype, Coppélia reflected the contemporary fascination with technology, but also with spiritualism and magnetism. Modern knowledge of the world allows us to treat these threads with greater distance, but the plot of Delibes' ballet itself remains interesting.
The action of Coppélia takes place in a small town, which in the visual aspect of the staging prepared by the Baltic Opera brings to mind Chagall's paintings.
